New Recycling Collection Procedures beginning in January, 2008

The city recently renewed its recycling contract with Wright Recycling. Wright Recycling has been serving the residents of Rockford for the past 13 years.

Beginning in January Wright Recycling will be providing what is called in the industry “two sort system” This simply means that residents will no longer have to sort all of their recyclables separately. Plastic, glass, tin and aluminum will be able to go into the same container.

The only items that will need to be separated will be newspapers, magazine, and junk mail, etc. (these items can still go into the same bag.) Cardboard will still need to be flatten and bundled in stacks no larger than 3’ x 3’

The city of Rockford urges residents to dispose of used household batteries through its battery-collection program. Certain types of batteries contain toxic metals and should not be thrown in the trash.

A dead battery drop container has been made available inside the entrance of the Rockford Library located at 8220 Cedar Street.

               Household battery types accepted.

              Button batteries; small, round; various

                 chemistries

              Rechargeable; small sealed lead-acid,

                 nickel-cadmium lithium-ion and nickel

                 metal hydride

Older alkaline and older carbon zinc batteries

Please do not place car batteries in this container, they can be recycled with the curbside collection.
