[Learn More]Spring Hydrant Flushing, Thursday, May 4th, 2023.
Violia will begin flushing the City’s fire hydrants and water mains around Midnight on May 4th, 2023. This process will take several hours to complete and should conclude in the late morning to early afternoon of May 4th.
Ever wonder why cities flush fire hydrants? Water moves slowly through the underground water main distribution system. The slow movement can cause sediment and minerals to build up over time and accumulate along the inside of the water pipes. Discolored water is typically iron or other minerals that are showing up in the system. Flushing the fire hydrants and water lines increases the movement and velocity of the water through the mains, flushing the minerals and sediment out of the water system. This process helps to ensure consistent water quality. Additionally, as part of the flushing process, every fire hydrant in the water system is operated and checked to ensure that it will operate properly if they are put into use.
If you use tap water during or immediately after hydrant flushing, note that the water may appear to be discolored or contain minerals due to the flushing process. If this occurs, shut off the water and wait approximately ten minutes. To clear out any minerals or discoloration in your water lines, run several cold-water faucets in your home to allow new water to work its way into your pipes. Try to avoid washing laundry until the water is clear from the tap, and consider starting with a dark load of laundry first to avoid discoloration.
