2026 Street Improvement Project
The City of Rockford’s 2026 Street Improvement Project will improve driving conditions and extend the life of several neighborhood streets by addressing pavement wear, drainage issues, and localized curb, sidewalk, and storm sewer repairs. The project focuses on preserving existing streets before more extensive and costly reconstruction is needed.
Work will include milling and overlaying asphalt, repairing select curbs and sidewalks, and upgrading storm sewer structures where deterioration has been identified. Construction is planned for summer 2026, and affected residents will receive advance notice and ongoing updates as the project progresses.
Rockford Wastewater Improvement Project Phase 1 (2026)
The City of Rockford is undertaking improvements to its Wastewater Treatment Facility to replace aging infrastructure, improve system reliability, and ensure continued protection of public health and the environment. Many core components of the facility have exceeded their intended service life, and these upgrades are necessary to maintain safe, efficient operations and meet current and future regulatory requirements.
To support continuous service and responsible project delivery, the improvements are being completed in two phases. This phased approach allows the City to address the most critical needs first while continuing to plan and advance additional upgrades. Completing the project in phases helps manage costs, reduce operational risks during construction, and ensure the wastewater treatment system continues to serve residents and businesses reliably throughout the process.
Project Updates:
Water Meter Replacement and Installation Project
The City-wide Water Meter Replacement Project will begin in the Fall of 2025. This project is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2029. There will be three phases of this project. All properties must get their water meter replaced at no cost to the property owner.
In order to complete the work necessary to read the water meter, the City will require access to the water meter and must enter most homes and businesses to do this. Typically, a water meter can be replaced in less than an hour. It is necessary that someone age 18 or older be present during the entire appointment.
The City has hired HydroCorp to contact property owners in the project areas. Please anticipate this company to reach out to you for scheduling the replacement. This company will also handle water meter replacements.
To prepare for replacement, homeowners will need to check their water valves to make sure they are functioning properly prior to the water meter replacement. The City will not cover the cost for replacing water valves on each side of the meter as those are the property of the homeowner. If you plan to have your water meter valve replaced before the project, the work must be completed by a licensed plumber and a permit may be required.
